Choose Love Over All Else

Retreats | News

I was a witness to a couple very much in love this week.  Their names are Destiny and Derwin.  On the first day of the Little Pink Retreat, they sat in their beach chairs and told me their story of “not getting married”.  You see, Destiny is very young- 31 in fact, and she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she found that it was the reason that she kept putting off a wedding.
She had scheduled her wedding in February of this past year and was undergoing treatments, so she canceled it because the thought of her wedding pictures with a bald head was too much to bear.  The wedding was rescheduled in August 2016 only to find that a doctor appointment with some news of bad scans made it impossible to think about getting married.  How can you be happy when you are so sad?  Like anyone in her shoes, her thoughts went immediately to “I do not want leave my husband or my son”.
So as the story unraveled and their love for each other was so clearly evident on both of their faces, I asked the question, “You have already decided that you want to live for your son and for Derwin, right?”  With a resounding YES! Destiny answered.  And the only follow-up statement that made sense was, “Getting married is just another choice to live as opposed to letting cancer keep you from living your joy”.  And so the tale of the first Little Pink wedding began!  They decided on Monday and they got married on Thursday!

The exact moment when it was a YES! Time to call the parents!

The exact moment when it was a YES! Time to call the parents!

This was more than a wedding- it was a commitment to living, a commitment to let joy wash over you, a commitment to love with abundance for as long as you can, and a commitment to live a life where you choose love over all else.   The Little Pink Volunstars could not have been any more excited to be a part of the planning and making a dream beach wedding a reality for Destiny and Derwin.  And the bride and groom wanted all of the other families to attend, because “they are our family!”
Congratulations to Destiny and Derwin for letting us all see that hope is possible, love is always within reach, and that the life that you get is a choice that you make!  Thanks for choosing love and letting us be a part of it!
